Whether the burden is grief, regret or some painful experience, many people have trouble letting go. But for some, the flight of a white bird can start the healing.
Lorca Smetana, a Bozeman woman with a quick smile, has combined human need and flight in a couple of ways.
More than a decade ago in Washington, she “accidentally” started a nonprofit that matches private pilots with patients who need care in distant hospitals. Now she trains homing pigeons that she releases in many ceremonies, both celebratory and somber.
Smetana grew up raising domestic birds but didn’t work with pigeons until eight years ago, after she married her husband Dušan. He had trained homing pigeons in his native Slovakia, so the couple bought land that the birds would identify as home.
Four years later, a friend asked the Smetanas to release a few pigeons at the funeral of his young daughter.
Smetana released a few gray pigeons and was amazed when people complimented her white birds.
