01-27-2012 Pigeon fanciers 'give Blackpool a £10m boost' |

Blackpool has had a £10m boost to its economy thanks to pigeon fanciers, it is claimed.
Thousands went to the resort this weekend for the 40th British Homing World Show of the Year staged at the Winter Gardens.
VisitBlackpool's Mandy Tythe-McCallum said: "[It] means a lot to business.
"The event takes place in January - a notoriously quiet time for businesses across the resort, so the event really does offer a well needed boost."
She added: "We estimate the British Homing World Show of the Year to be worth somewhere in the region of £10m to businesses across Blackpool - that includes B&Bs, hotels, restaurants, shops and all other businesses who benefit from over 25,000 weekend visitors flocking to Blackpool for the show every year."
More than 1,000 show pigeons and 3,000 racing pigeons were on show at the event, organised by the Royal Pigeon Racing Association.

THE distraught owner of Pimhole Community Farm has been left “absolutely sick” after thieves stole pigeons, hens, doves and rabbits in three separate raids within just six days.
Farm owner Stuart Andrews is now considering stepping up security at the two-and-a-half acre site on School Street.
He has owned the farm for 30 years but only opened it to the community in 2004. The thefts took place on January 14 and 15, and last Friday after offenders scaled a 5ft high fence on each occasion.
Mr Andrews said: “On the first night, two doves were stolen and then five doves, two hens and two rabbits were taken the following night. Last Friday, thieves took eight racing pigeons, 15 hens and carrying boxes for the birds. All the pigeons had rings, but they’ve probably been removed.”
But Mr Andrews believes the pigeons were not taken for racing purposes as their natural homing instincts would see them fly back to the farm.
On the effects of the thefts, the 71-year-old continued: “I’m absolutely sick. These animals mean a lot to us. We work night and day here, seven days a week. We’re self-funded and don’t charge. All I want is for th...
